The Best (new) NYC (delivered) Breakfast

Tired of boring bagels and cream cheese for the office breakfast? What about BREAKFAST TACOS? In November, I learned about Farm 2 Tacos and am bewildered that it has taken me so long to blog about this brilliant concept.  Delivery breakfast tacos! The variety of flavors and combinations is quite astonishing -- from fillings to tortilla types -- you can really make this a crowd pleaser. I'm looking forward to: Maple Bacon Indian Eggs (what is that?) Chunky Guacamole Pure Brisket Kale Spicy Potatoes Corn tortilla. Always.  (But if you want flour, spelt, whole wheat etc, you can have that too.) 30 tacos for approximately $150 does seem a bit more expensive than the bagel and CC route, but well worth it.  Think of all the protein and veggie goodness! Hopefully I will order these soon and will review them more promptly.

Morning Crunch

Granola is not "good for you".  I remember the pangs of disappointment and loss I felt when I learned that my high school go-to-breakfast of bowls filled with granola (a.k.a. Nature Valley Oats 'n Honey bars broken into pieces) was not the breakfast of champions.  Store bought granola is packed with sugar, not to mention all the processed grains, dried fruits etc. Being gluten-free, I have a burning desire to try everything labeled as such and so have had my fair share of unhealthy granolas -- gluten free is not a euphemism for health -- pass through my kitchen (and into my mouth). The options have increased tremendously -- Udi's, Purely Elizabeth, Bare Naked, KIND -- and if you want to find gluten free granola, there is a spectrum of choices and health qualities you can choose from. In an effort to minimize my grocery store spending and maximize the health benefits of my food but still enjoy the sweet delicious crunchy goodness of granola, I set out to make my ow...

The Most Important Meal of the Day

BREAKFAST.....tacos. You don't have to tell me twice.  I believe the breakfast taco originated in Austin, Texas, and has been making moves across the U.S. for year.  The beauty of the breakfast taco is you can make it your own -- a blank corn-tortilla palette.  Like bacon? Prefer chorizo?  Pick your poison. Add it to your taco.  ENJOY. Saveur offered a recipe for a pretty standard "bacon, egg, and cheese" + avocado + potatoes.  What more do you want in a warm breakfast "sandwich"? http://www.saveur.com/breakfast-taco-recipe Go forth and breakfast taco!

Austin IIII. Los Tacos.

Austin is known for their tacos.  I know that Texas is where "Tex-Mex" food originated (duh), but what is about Austin and tacos, specifically?  The world wide web yields many results for "Best Tacos in Austin" or restaurant/taqueria proprietary sites, but the strong connection between Austin and Tacos is still a mystery.  I overcame the unknown and embarked on a taco adventure in Austin, TX. The first "tacos" I had were at  Arturo's Bakery and Cafe  on 17th Street (an easy walk from UT's campus).  I walked into this little restaurant/counter service joint and loved how immediately friendly the man behind the counter was.  The chalkboard menu features breakfast (served until 11am) with the ever popular Austin staple -- The Breakfast Taco.  They had sandwiches and salads and quesadillas.  Where were the tacos?  I asked for a quesadillas  suggestion.  If I was in the mood for something sweet, the Sesame Ginger Chicken 'd...

Saturday Morning

Image
My dad and I were hangin' in my hood on this chilly Saturday morning when we decided a cup of coffee and a place to sit and chat (and maybe grab a bite to eat) was in order. I've been walking by Oro Bakery and Bar  on Broome Street since I moved down to SoLiChi (SoHo/ Little Italy/Chinatown a.k.a. No Man's Land) and today decided it would be the perfect venue to fit the bill. The little bakery/bar/cafe has 4 tables in the front (potentially more in the back, I didn't venture past the cashier) and upon walking in I immediately felt a homey warmth to the place.  Sitting at one of the two-tops, my dad and I ordered cappuccinos and a croissant and blueberry yogurt with almonds and honey, respectively. I was very torn between the yogurt and the homemade granola with almond milk, but knowing that I will definitely go back to Oro, I opted for the yogurt.  The menu also features egg dishes, tartines, and salads that all sounded very appetizing and seemed reasonably pri...

BLD. Chilaquiles.

I love breakfast. Yes, it's the most important meal of the day, but it's also something that can take on so many shapes and forms.  I'm a big egg person so that tends to be the base of my breakfast, but I'm happy adventuring into the land of pancakes (gluten-free, of course), yogurt parfaits, and other interesting creations. When breakfast and Mexican food come together, I jump for joy. A favorite Mexican dish of mine is "chilaquiles".  El Centro ( http://www.elcentro-nyc.com /) describes Chilaquiles as a "casserole" of tortilla chips and other goodness.  It's not a taste for everyone -- some see it as soggy chips, but I find chilaquiles to be like Mexican comfort food and the perfect dish to have for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. So, when my favorite meal of the day joins one of my favorite dishes, I cannot resist. This recipe from PureWow for Breakfast Chilaquiles (to get rid of all your Super Bowl leftovers) is spot on.  A bit elaborate...
